Up and Down Week

So my bankroll is now floating around 380, but the week has caused it to fluctuate alot.

At first I was in the 100s due to playing in a cash game I should not have been in continuously chasing "money I had lost", which I realize should never be done. And I hope it was a lesson learned.

I then joined the Sunday Million being that I normally work during the weekends so it was rare to find myself able to participate in the event and wanted to play in a big tourny. I did alright placing 744th out of 8001, so I took a little profit home which basically brought me back to where I was a week ago.

After this fiasco of a week, I started looking up some articles on bankroll management, although I do follow pretty strict guidelines sometimes I break them here and there and realize the importance of that "sometimes" can have some serious affects.

So hopefully, I stick to the plan although I have a feeling that there will probably be a next time, I mean we are all human and quite frankly, how many people have the bankroll to play, that play in the main event? So in that since I feel I am still ahead of most players. Let's just keep it in the most controlled sense as possible.

Broke Evenish

Well after a long day of playing, basically broke even with a lot of frustrating loses to 3 and 2 outers but well its all part of the game; as Tom McAvoy puts it:

"Your mission is to put yourself in a position to get very lucky"

and well more often or not in the positions, I would of made it so I'm happy with my overall play.

Played a little out of my bankroll, playing in some 180-man $12 turbos, which to me was fine because I think I didn't lose much there, probably would have made a lil profit if I didn't but the couple of time getting close to the top was very well worth it I believe.

As for the SNG Leader Board for last week, I ended up in 27th after a bunch of people all the sudden placed, but still don't mind taking the extra $30, pretty difficult getting on their in the first place so all is well.

I'm set around $350 at the moment for the bankroll, still grinding grinding, and feeling very good.

SNG Leader Board?

Hey guys!

SNGs have been doing very well for me now that I have adjusted to playing at a little higher level. You can mainly find me nowadays at the 6.50 Turbo 9-man SNGs, and at this moment it time it looks like I will have 450 points for this week in the Venus division (Pokerstars SNG Promotion) placing me at 12th for leader board for a $40 bonus to my bankroll. I think that should be the final standing, I'm not sure if I need to play one more SNG or what but will update when I know.

My bankroll now is floating at $320. (Do those who don't know, I started with $8 on my pokerstars account and grinded up to this point with strict guidelines).

Also, you can kind of keep track of my progress here at:

http://www.pokerprolabs.com/thinkjc/pokerstars.aspx

However that only keeps track of MTTs, SNGs, and Heads-up matches, not any cash games I may randomly play in. *Also currently one of my favorite ranking sites to look at.

Thanks for dropping by!

11.19, updates updates updates

Hey guys,

Been a little bit since I last wrote. So I thought I would give a little update on everything poker related that involves me.

So in terms of my Bankroll, I managed to bump it to currently at $230, playing mainly any sort of $5 buy-ins from MTTs to SNGs and heads-up matches (with the occasional cash game buy-in)

At first SNGs were my main point of profit but I've been having a little trouble transitioning to the $5 buy-in turbo players, and just barely breaking even the last couple of outings.

However, my MTTs play has been doing very will with placing 197th out of 3195 in a $5 Rebuy and 79th out of 3186 in the $5 rebuy the next day(yesterday) taking in approx $65 and $93 respectively. So I have been happy with those, especially since the hands that busted me (or close to it) were hands were I started as the favorite, so nothing wrong with that.

Also from when I first started the blog, my Official Poker Ranking was approx in the 72nd precentile and I managed to bump into the 75.60th pecentile so thats nice too.

I started a Pocket Fives profile, mainly to read articles etc.

Well thats all I can think of for now.

Thanks!

1st in a 45 1$sit-and-go, 3rd in a 180 $2sit-and-go

Had a pretty good outing on two sit-and-goes I played at the same time. For the $2SNG; Sad, but the best way to get out of a tourny. In with the best and sucked out on (Last hand posted at the end of this posting).

This puts my "PokerStars" from scratch bankroll to $147. Feeling pretty good about it =)

So I wanted to show a couple of examples of how anything is possible. FYI, both these hands happened in the same heads-up match within 5 minutes of each other. I still won the match but I was starting to believe that this guy just couldn't lose a race lol XD

Heads Up Play.

Hey guys,

So today I wanted to talk a little bit about a hand that I played during a $5 heads up match on pokerstars. Sometime I have a hard time explaining exactly what is going on in my thinking process but I will try my best here.

*Also a bankroll update, got my intial $8 up to $41 now after a little bit of grinding on pokerstars.

PokerStars Game #21834407995: Tournament #118984907, $5.00+$0.25 Hold'em No Limit - Match Round I, Level I (10/20) - 2008/11/07 12:52:49 ET

So here is the set up. The guy that I was playing was I believe to be a more aggressive type with just the right amount to make a good heads up player. Not overly and knew how to choose spots to bet. This hand happened after I made a couple of aggressive continuation bets without hitting anything and thus losing the chip lead. So at this time, both him and I believe had looser images then normal.

Table '118984907 1' 2-max Seat #2 is the button
Seat 1: thinkjc (1150 in chips)
Seat 2: 3_masaru_1 (1850 in chips)
3_masaru_1: posts small blind 10
thinkjc: posts big blind 20
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to thinkjc [Qc Td]
3_masaru_1: raises 40 to 60

Ok so while playing heads-up, I tend to try and play a lot of my hands from position to get an advantage that way. My game tends to lean toward small ball poker from position, but because of the strength of the hand I decided to forgo the position advantage and look him up. Also with in mind that both images I believe are to be on the looser side so I didn’t give much credit for his raise.

thinkjc: calls 40
*** FLOP *** [Ah As 7c]
thinkjc: checks
3_masaru_1: bets 20

Now with this flop, I decided to check to see what he would do,  and he bet a min raise 20 into a pot of 120. For an average player that would have an Ace, he would likely to slow play this hand a bit being almost the nut. He betting 20, I believe that he was just checking to see where I was at for the cheapest possible price and so I decided to stick with my instinct that he was just doing a continuation bet to steal the pot and call.
thinkjc: calls 20
*** TURN *** [Ah As 7c] [Js]
thinkjc: checks
3_masaru_1: bets 60

This time a bet of 60 into a pot of 140 still a very small raise in terms of the pot, it could be considered a value bet of sorts but again I decided to call.

thinkjc: calls 60
*** RIVER *** [Ah As 7c Js] [Qs]
thinkjc: checks
3_masaru_1: bets 420

Now the river comes hitting my Q however giving a possible flush. With 420 into a pot of 260, he massively overbet the pot incomparison to his smaller bets previously. My chip stack was also floating 1010 so if I was to call it would be almost half my chip stack in jeopardy. But because of the metagame of our images I didnt believe he put me on anything. You could debate to go all in at this junction but I was also confident that if my call was wrong, I could make a come back with 600 chips.

thinkjc: calls 420
*** SHOW DOWN ***
3_masaru_1: shows [8c 5c] (a pair of Aces)
thinkjc: shows [Qc Td] (two pair, Aces and Queens)
thinkjc collected 1120 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 1120 | Rake 0
Board [Ah As 7c Js Qs]
Seat 1: thinkjc (big blind) showed [Qc Td] and won (1120) with two pair, Aces and Queens
Seat 2: 3_masaru_1 (button) (small blind) showed [8c 5c] and lost with a pair of Aces

So I was correct that I was good the whole way and scooped it. Winning the match all together as we progressed.

Without thinking of the metagame and preplay, I probably would of folded by the turn but by observing tendacies and comparing with other plays that you had seen, a somewhat harder call can become an easy call.

While on Pokerstars...

After an attempted freeroll on FullTilt (1502th/2700 this time.) I wanted to see the freeroll situation on Pokerstars and maybe attempt a similar bankroll building that I want to do on FullTilt. I then noticed that I had about $25 deposited leftover from a tournment that I did there. I decided to have some fun and after a number of 2.20 and 4.40 tournaments, I found myself with $8 left.

Disappointed, and not willing to deposit anything, I went to sleep and decided to play another day which is whenI decided to tighten up today and follow the Chris Ferguson bankroll rules, playing small cash games per to a percentage size of my total bankroll and allowance of $1 sit-and-goes.

I decided that one of my bigger strengths as a player is more so sit-and-go situations so I decided to focus my time there instead of small buy-in large tournys and small cash tables. So... alot of $1 sit-and-goes later, I find myself at $14 now! Yippee for me, maybe instead of turning $0 into something on FullTilt, I'll try and turn $8 into something on PokerStars.

Anyways I will keep this updated if anyone cares as my journal for it. Thanks!

Taking the Chris Ferguson Challenge

Hey guys,

So I haven't updated my blog recently as I have been just focusing on playing live games but decided to try something out now back on Full-Tilt.

So I decided to try and sort of challenge myself by taking the Chris Ferguson Challenge.

Although it may take awhile (being a quite busy as a Full-Time Student/Full-Time worker), this was a challenge that I have given alot of respect for, that is starting at 0 and making it into something.

So as the same as Chris Ferguson, I will focus on trying to make the top on a freeroll to get started then hopefully start grinding it out.

My first freerolls that I entered (structured to reward the top 27 players), I placed 159th out of 2700 and 924th out of 2700.

So currently still at a $0 bankroll.

Wish me luck!

Reading Tips

The best piece of advice that I have ever read/told/etc. has to be the tip on Full Tilt Poker.com that Phil Ivey wrote; titled "Don't Read This Tip" (which I suggest you read if you haven't).

http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/pro-tip/PhilIvey/125

His advice was "Read this tip. Read other tips and poker books. Talk to your friends. Absorb as much information as you can. But at the end of the day you have to trust your instincts and play your own game - not someone else's."

What everyone must remember is that at the end of the day, everyone plays there own style of poker. There is no one way to win at this game; yes there are distinct and subtle similarities to those that win frequently but again the key to poker is outwitting your opponent. If all your opponents plays exactly by the book, then sometimes you have to 'throw out the book' in order to win.

When I am writing tips about poker strategy, I want to make sure that viewers are clear that this is how I play and this is the style that has brought me the most success so far. I will not say that it is the style to play, and it may not be your style or a poker pro's like Phil Ivey, but this is the style that has allowed me to win consistantly.

A style comes from experience from every single thing that someone learns about poker. The ultimate goal being to make the most correct decisions, at the table, according to what you know about poker from your experiences.

I hope when people read my blog, they will take it in as so. Every poker player who wants to be a true student of the game, or student of anything, understands the idea of "emptying your cup". I will take any players advice, no matter the level. As Mike Sexton always says "No Limit Hold'em takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master" and hopefully from my help, and yours, we can both become better players.

thinkjc; the poker player profile

Thinkjc is my online poker screen name on both PokerStars.com and FullTiltPoker.com. I mainly played on Full Tilt in 2007 and played here and there on PokerStars this year (2008).

I am a currently a 20 yo college student and have been playing poker for 3 years.

Now before you dismiss me and my blog I will shoot you some facts of my current poker career:

According to Official Poker Rankings*; for 2007, I am ranked in the 95.94% percentile of all online tournament poker players.
According to Official Poker Rankings*;(as of today for this year), I am ranked in the 72.65% percentile of all online tournament poker players.
Currently hired as a Shill/Proposition Player by a local poker Cardroom.

The forms of poker that I believe that I am an expert in and love to play (in order) are:

Limit Texas Hold em Cash Games
No Limit Texas Hold em Tournys and Cash Games
Pot Limit Texas Hold em Cash Games
Omaha Hi-Lo Split Cash Games
Omaha Hi Cash Games

Of course the style of poker that you should play should, and will, vary from each game and sit-in that you play; I predominately try to play a Tight-Aggressive format but according to PokerListings.com Online Player Data base; I am...

Player Type: Bomb
(Aggressive PreFlop/Aggressive PostFlop).
My aggressive play makes the table fear me. Most top poker professionals are bombs.
Strengths:
Win many pots on bluffs and semi-bluffs and often get paid off on big hands.
Weaknesses:
Sometimes lack discipline. People are often able to slow-play or check-raise because they know I'll bet.

My Best Tournament Finishes so far are; $3 rebuy tourny on FullTilt, finishing 1st out of 611 to win $1,201 and then 2 weeks later a $22 rebuy tourny on FullTilt, finishing 4th out of 254 to win $1,361.

As a player
As I player, I love to continually improve my game by reading various books by pros and playing online and live every now then. I mainly play Low to Mid Stakes Poker at the moment and every once in a while throw in a High Stakes Poker Tournment and a lot of Low Stakes Poker Tournaments.

Hope to see you either at the table, or more on this blog!

Starting a Poker blog....

and yes doesn't it seem like everyone is nowadays. This is just a short intro on why and what I want to do with this blog. I am hoping though to keep up with this in between work, school and poker and hopefully start up so good discussions.

So what do I plan on doing with this blog. Well mainly it will be a combination of things but all focusing primarily obviously on Poker. From my personal poker experiences, to poker books, commentary on poker articles, play by play, WPT to bad beat stories. I just hope people who share my love and passion of the game will see that and check it out. Thanks!
